Proper Planning: The Easiest Way to Save Your Video Production Budget

Let’s face it: sometimes your boss asks you to put together a video from scratch, and then balks at the cost of the process. In today’s cutthroat marketing environment, you’re expected to keep coming up with more and more content, even though your budgets aren’t getting any bigger.

So, what can you do to crank out a video that looks good, represents your message correctly, and will be engaging for your audience without breaking the bank or sacrificing quality?

Proper planning is one of the most effective ways to save on cost. If you want to have a national quality piece, you are going to have to utilize certain things: a good camera and operator, a sound technician, a lighting professional, (also called a gaffer,) and an editor. While there are so many other aspects to consider, these four areas are considered the absolute basics. Interestingly enough, all of these individuals involved in the aforementioned areas, base what they will charge on a daily or hourly scale.

With that in mind, if you are imagining a five-day shoot to cover six areas of content, you would be looking at a fairly significant cost associated with it. If possible, you should try to find a way to combine the different areas of content when it makes sense. Perhaps you could cover two subjects a day, resulting in a three-day shoot instead of a five-day shoot. A solid production company can work with you on the front-end to ensure that you are using your time wisely, especially when there is potential to save you and your company money.

That being said, it’s important not to cram too much into a single time frame. There is nothing worse than trying to capture several aspects in a timeframe that is too small, just to find out in the editing process that you didn’t record a number of things that you wish you would have.
